I agree about the scene during the second test when Paige went against Warden’s warning. I was so frustrated with her, but it falls in line with lots of her actions, where she takes risks regardless of the consequences 😅

I also really adored the scene with the butterfly possession, and to me, it made so much sense.

I found myself not caring to much about the budding romance, but liked the friendships, even if some of them felt like instant-friendship without much explanation as to why they suddenly trusted each other!

I’ve switched over to the audiobook now, to see if I can make more progress 🙂 Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be picking up the rest of the series. It’s a shame, since I really enjoyed the Roots of Chaos universe. I honestly don’t even want to imagine what this book looked like before Samantha Shannon re-edited it. She’s really come a long way as an author but I don’t think there is an editor in this world that could make this story work for me.

We still finish cause we’re not quitters though 🙂

I also switched to the audiobook and so it was at least reasonably enjoyable.

However, there are a few things that annoyed me so much that I won’t be continuing the series.

First, there was this time jump where they were planning the howl riot. and then after the time jump they tell me how they bonded through fighting and whatever? I don’t want to hear that I would much rather have read that.

The other thing that bugs me so much is the kiss and how they’re somehow tied to each other. Couldn’t they have a deeper relationship without being tied to each other? And why the kiss and all the risk. I don’t even understand the kiss because there was very little chemistry between them and the kiss seemed so rushed. Oh, and what a good idea to risk the rebellion.

Chiara_kiki That kiss was plain stupid. Plot wise it did not surprise me. They had the hots for each other for a long, long time before that. What annoyed me was that is was neither the time nor the place for physical affection. I get she fears death and he fears for her wellbeing, but the guy is over 200 years old. At least Arcturus should be able to keep his cool. Paige would totally do such a stupid thing. She never thinks and has no self preservation whatsoever.

Being tied to each other is such a common romantic fantasy trope that I don’t respond to that any more whilst reading. But perhaps it will be important for the future instalments. This connection could result in cool (or weird) plot beats, if Paige could dreamwalk to Arcturus or he enters her dreams when they are far apart. Could get interesting. But BS was not very original. I fear that part was just weaved in to show that they were made for each other and how super-duper special Paige is.

I liked the beginning of the book. That change of setting and the cold throw into this magical system grabbed me at first.

Even though I wasn’t a huge fan of Paige and Warden’s “relationship” at the end, my favorite scene was when she treated his wounds and was a little ruff on purpose.

I also find the magic system very intriguing and would have much preferred it if they had used their different powers (like in the the pale dreamer novella).

art3mi5 I literally just got to the kiss scene and that was so awkward to read. Same thing with the Reuben memory scene. I understand why the book was a bestseller at the time but I feel like it has aged rather poorly.

Chiara_kiki My fav. scene was the one Paige possessed the butterfly and panicked.

I also enjoyed the scenes with Jaxon Hall. He is so over the top. Especially his dramatic entrance in Oxford was cool. And his understanding of the magical system. He is smart, brutal and no love interest. What a rare combination.

Unfortunately, we did not see much about the different powers during the novel. The magic system is indeed intriguing.

l1brary The Reuben memory was so awkward. I was sympathetic with him. He seemed to be a genuinely okay guy. Paige was plain stupid. Regret is no assault from Reubens side. He hasn’t done anything wrong. I blame Paige (and her alone) for that terrible experience. I would be very ashamed for acting as she did, just because ones crush fell in love with someone other.

Hi everyone!

I finally got around to read the final part and gosh, I did NOT remember this at ALL. It felt like reading it for the first time all over again which made me begin to wonder if they must’ve changed it? Regardless I still enjoy the series in a whole but I have to admit, I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as I did when I was younger. I’m sure that plays a big role as since then I’ve read my fair share of books. I like to rate my books in a objective way even with rereads. What would you guys rate it all together if you’d rate it more objectively?

FlakiM I’ve already wrote my review and rated BS two stars. I thought the plot, writing and characters to be subpar. Some parts streched. Paige was too passive. The book overall too long. The assimilation of special vocabulary was not possible, so glossary reading was mandatory to get everything. That is poor writing.

FlakiM Personally, I don’t really like rating books objectively since I believe that reviews are meant to help readers with similar tastes find books they enjoy. From an objective standpoint, I thought the writing was pretty good and it had a nice flow. I can totally see why Samantha Shannon went back to edit the book and you can really tell how she’s grown as a writer. However, the world building was overly complicated and hard to believe in my opinion. Furthermore, the characters felt really passive and underdeveloped and the book was as much too long.

l1brary That’s a fair point. I completely understand where you’re coming from. Generally it was a nice road down memory lane for me and I might continue the series anyway! I believe it’s considered high fantasy? Not sure on that one as I’m not too familiar with (sub)genres.
