Belana_st I missed out on this plan and am lagging a bit. I am also back to my original state of thinking the author is trying too hard or maybe I am just not the write demographic for this kind of book. There are too many American allusions, current slang etc which do not age well. Of course, lots of books have (sometimes obscure) cultural allusions and slang but this can be alienating. It’s possible to write a contemporary book without these - see, for example, Sally Rooney’s Normal People.

SwissHelena I totally agree that there are too many American allusions. that’s also something that annoyed me quite a bit, as it makes reading a lot more tedious for people who don’t know these things. I think it’s OK every now and then, but she uses it almost too excessively. I guess it’s supposed to be extra cool to write like that. Anyway, i’ve gotten used to it and can see beyond it by now…

Such an interesting take on the story! I completely agree with your stance on American Allusion (granted, I needed to google that word first) I don’t believe the author has timelessness in mind when she writes her novels. In “Happy Place” there are just as much “new” slang and current happening mentioned that I believe it becomes rather nostalgic. Sally Rooney does a great job to avoid that but I can’t help to think that it feels impersonal, you know what I mean?

SwissHelena I think you cannot compare this book so easily with Normal People. I think this one just does not have the sociological layer that the other one has. Emily Henry just writes the relaxing love stories with smut and has no other ambitions. Whereas Sally Rooney wanted to write an intellectual novel about love. And that is why their language is so different. Frankly, I found the lack of punctuation and language in Normal People harder to read (also annoying, as if she was trying to show how posh and well-educated a writer she is) than some American references in this book.

Hi Guys!

So I finished the first part and I’m definitely one of those that got into the story quick! It’s the first book by Emily Henry I read and I’m really liking her writing.

As a few of you already noted, I think Daphnes approach to the breakup is really good and also refreshing to see that in a romance novel. I had expected more anger directed at Peter.

And right now I’m really liking the relationship between Daphne and Miles and I’m exited to read more.

I love the story so far! It started and had a really interesting introduction to Daphne‘s love experience with Peter. It actually surpassed my expectations.

I still have mix feelings about Daphne. On the one hand I understand her and know that she still needs her time to find herself and so on. On the other hand it feels as she would have prejudices against other people, which I cannot identifx myself with.

About the relationship of Daphne and Miles: I first thought they would not get along, but it changed really fast and I feel they actually like each other and there is some chemistry that they have to find out first. So far I like it 😊

It is my first book of Emily Henry. So far, I really enjoyed the story. The first 128 pages flew by quickly. The characters are very well described, and you quickly find them lovable. The author mixes humour with heavier themes like loss, new beginnings, and the quest for personal happiness. The right book for readers who enjoy romantic books with a bit of depth. Unfortunately, I must admit that I probably I don’t understand all the nuances of the funny parts, that’s a pity., So far, the book is very enjoyable to read. I really like Daphne and Miles, but not so much Petra and Peter, they’re unsympathetic right now. I’m excited to see what happens next.

Some of you found it easier to get into the story, others took a little longer. How did your approach to the characters and the story change in the middle part?

The love interest always plays an important role in RomCom books. How do you find Miles presented and do you like him? Would you fall in love with him? 😉

On page 206 the magic happens. 💫 (if you, you know)
How many of you also had butterflies in your stomach? I felt a tingling sensation, but I could also understand Daphne’s reaction a little.

I can’t wait to see what twists and turns the story of these two will take.

I recently finished the second section, and regrettably, I did not enjoy it as much as the first. It became monotonous after the initial “tingling in the stomach,” which was, to put it mildly, a pleasant surprise. It seemed to me that the plot actually came to a standstill and that Daphne’s longing for Miles was the only thing left. By the time they went kayaking, I was thinking of dropping the book altogether. Fortunately, things improved and the story went on. Miles’s tragic childhood narrative has now come to light, and while it is heartbreaking, I was happy that my initial fears were unfounded. The main surprise hasn’t happened yet, but that’s okay for me. My guess is that Peter and Petra will do all in their power to return to Daphne and Miles. They obviously disagree because they fell in love and are getting married (or just living together happily ever after). In fact, I would rather prefer this to happen because I adore happy endings and would be quite sad if a novel this colorful left me unhappy. To be clear, even though I did have some criticisms, overall, I think it’s a fun read and I’m eager to keep going.

I was a litte behind with the first part and only finished the 2nd one today. And I wouldn’t read any of your comments on the book until today because I didn’t want to accidentally read any spoilers… I realized that reading books in English takes me much longer than in German and I was very busy at work that 1st week. But now I will stay on track for part 3.

I don’t trust the Miles character. Or maybe I just don’t think he seems like a real person to me. He is always so nice and thoughtful and everyone likes him and also he likes everyone (except for those two weird people from the kayaking scene). So I hope he will lose this what I believe to be a mask or if he truly will stay a brown labrador then I think that’s kind of dull.

Daphne on the other hand is a character I could identify with from the beginning. And I like how she is evolving for example how the text in the titles of the chapters changed from “until I can leave” to “if I want to” to “until the Read-a-thon”. And I’m excited about getting to know more about her father and their relationship in the 3rd part. Maybe we will find out about the reason for her buttoned up clothes and more. I think it’s an interesting book and I’m excited to find out how this story ends. Though I must say that especially in the beginning I thought that this was everything but a funny story. More horrifying. Imagine experiencing something like Daphne just weeks before your wedding day. So I haven’t warmed up to the title of the book so far.

As eventful as this week has been for me, the second part of the book has been, as I said, soo slow. 🐌 The universe hangs in the balance, I guess. 🌎

But I am impatient for more drama. I do not like the family growing-up problems. We all have our own small/big trauma, no need for the book characters to have one. But Peter/Petra disturbing the relationship will be a great storyline. 💋

Sabijelo I completely agree. I also didn’t like the second part as much as the first one. In the first part I really liked Daphne and Miles. They both seemed to be independent and (somewhat) self-confident. In the second part, I was quite annoyed with Daphne. It felt like reading a teen book. Especially in the beginning it was only her blushing and longing for Miles. Even after apparently understanding why it is a bad idea to be together. I also think that it got better again at the end of the second part. So hopefully the third part will be more interesting again. I still really like Miles though and it was interesting to learn more about his past and how he opens up to Daphne.

Sabijelo I agree with you on all points. I really like Miles, but Daphne really has some special characteristics. Especially when she ran out of the hall at the Senior Prom, I thought that was a bit over the top.

I really hope the third part will bring back some of the flavour. I wonder if there are enough pages left for a big twist. Even though I want the book to have a smooth happy ending, I still hope for a twist or two. 😊

Oh I love a good happy-end-story! In movies but also in books BUT only in romance novels!! If I am reading a romance story, I want to be happy all throughout the book hahaha (but a little drama in the way adds a little…flavour. for sure.)

I finished the second last evening.

It’s easy to read along and made me smirk quite a few times. But I agree that the plot was a little slow. While Miles is a real sympathetic character, Daphne does seam a little childish sometimes. Nevertheless I’m looking forward to reading their happily ever after.

I have to agree with you all. The development of Daphne over the second part was a bit disappointing and annoying. Some of her actions I really can’t relate to like the Senior Prom scene 🤨

I’m looking forward to finish the last part of the book and the ending…… hopefully a happy ending 😍
