Great point to be honest! I was also surprised how well Daphne took the news and how she decided to move forward. It’s a very realistic approach to be honest which is very refreshing for a romance novel!

I have never read a book by Emily Henry before, and to be honest, it is not a book I would have bought for myself—not my genre… Also the blurb really did not draw me to the book.

However, I must say it is a really good and easy read, in the best sense. I finished the first part in 2 days and really enjoyed it. I empathise with both characters and I find myself smiling while I read. All in all, I totally look forward to reading the next part.

I love this genre of disastrous but funny love stories. But to be honest, it took me a while to warm up to this one. @SwissHelena for me the beginning was also trying too hard. Slowly but steadily I got sucked into to book and now I can’t wait reading what’s happening next.

Because of the description of his messy beard, I don’t picture Miles as beeing blonde, so he must be a brown labrador (BTW if you want to limit your screen time, don’t google brown labrador puppies 😍). While Peter seems to be a “Ken” nice but stiff as a poker. We haven’t really read too much about Petra yet, so I can’t really imagine what she’s like. So far of course our sympathies are with Daphne and Miles.

Rosali Peter is definitely Ken! I imagine him that way too, but it does not really correspond with his nice family ? 🤷
As for Miles, we are also on the same side. Brown Labrador for me! 🐕 Maybe he could be the older brother of Davide Vavala, about ten years older and a bit more ingrown. 😁 Definitely super cool and chill, when he is not having his heart broken. @FlakiM Do you have anyone in particular in mind as “Blonde Miles”? 😉

Belana_st I didn’t finish reading the blurb… somehow found it too exhausting and only read it after the 128 pages…

Somehow I really had to bite my way through at the beginning to continue reading, I was rather bored. I also wondered whether I should finish the book at all…but in the last 20 pages of the first third I found it more and more enjoyable. I hope it continues like this…

Hi everyone, I’ve finished the first part of the reading 🙂 I have to agree with you guys it took me a little to get into it and I also felt at some points they were trying a little too hard 🙂 But after getting into the story I feel like I will like this book more than “happy place” and I’m looking forward to getting further into the story this week 🙂

On the other hand, I was just wondering. Emily Henry has written another book 📕 on the subject of books 📚. I know we are all here for books 📘 and love 💞, but hey, girl, it is starting to get a little weird and boring.

📖 I was afraid it was going to be really slow, but she managed to juggle more tropes in the first part of the book than I expected.

Poor Daphne. I always thought this kind of story was just the author’s imagination, but since a friend of mine has a really wild “I’m going to marry someone else”, I just enjoy the flow. Although I think she should be a bit more freaked out! 🤪

I liked the domestic scenes between Miles and Daphne. 💝

It’s exciting that many of you found the start hard, I found my way into the story very quickly. Funnily enough, I realised yesterday that I already own a book by Emily Henry called “People we meet on vacation”, but I never looked at it again after a few pages. Perhaps I should give it another chance.

So far the book reminds me a lot of Colleen Hoover’s romances. Easy and fun to read. I laughed out loud a couple of times in the first 128 pages. I like the “teasing humour” that exists between Damphne and Miles. The image of Miles as a brown Labrador fits really well, only the fact that he smokes weed doesn’t quite fit in with this Labrador image for me. But perhaps that’s a play with their opposites on the fact that Peter has his green wheatgrass smoothies and Miles has his “grass”.

Do you think the relationship between Miles and his family will deepen in the book? I felt like he was hiding something.

It’s quite interesting to read that a few of you found the beginning hard. I enjoyed it from page one and read the first 128 pages in two days. Admittedly, the story is a bit predictable, but I do like the humorous dialogues as well as the characters. I have the feeling that there might be a surprise waiting, but maybe that’s wishful thinking ;-) I am looking forward to the next part.

I read the first 128 pages in the last few hours and I really thought this book wasn’t for me. Only because I just finished another one and still can’t believe their story is over. 😂

I also found the beginning a bit hard to get into, but that changed quickly. I really like the dynamic between Miles and Daphne. They seem to get along right from the start and there’s not a bad bone in either of them. At the same time, I’m a little nervous that Miles is hiding something about his family. 🤔

But isn’t it adorable how he sees and focuses on so many details about her? Like the part where he noticed her “coffee” from that one particular place. Or that he has already studied her calendar?😍 He really is interested in her and what she likes and who she is. I also loved how they laughed about the bad first kiss and then followed it up with a firework of a kiss. They’re clearly attracted to each other and so sweet. I can’t wait to read more about them and am already loving my first Emily Henry book. 📖♥

I, as well, just finished the first 128 pages, and I’m joining the club “I got into it very easy and quick”. I just love those kinds of books. And I happily join the clubs Peter = Ken and Miles = brown Labrador, it made me laugh out loud as I read my thoughts reflected in many of the comments here 😋

I really like the writing style and am very happy that I got into this book club, because I would’ve probably not read the book otherwise.

I’m pretty sure without the book club, I would not have read the book simply by reading the blurb, but to be honest, I had to laugh about the “falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex… right?” bit. I somehow got the feeling of “dumpster fire” out of the blurb. For now, that is not the case, and I hope that it won’t turn into that.

I feel for Daphne, she seemed to give everything for Peter, and he just went on…

But I really, really like the dynamics between Daphne and Miles. I am really looking forward to learning more about them, together, as well as about them individually. And I do hope we hear more about Miles’s family…

No doubt, after reading all the comments here and finishing my first comment, I am immediately going to continue with the story, I can’t wait 😍

Belana_st I missed out on this plan and am lagging a bit. I am also back to my original state of thinking the author is trying too hard or maybe I am just not the write demographic for this kind of book. There are too many American allusions, current slang etc which do not age well. Of course, lots of books have (sometimes obscure) cultural allusions and slang but this can be alienating. It’s possible to write a contemporary book without these - see, for example, Sally Rooney’s Normal People.

SwissHelena I totally agree that there are too many American allusions. that’s also something that annoyed me quite a bit, as it makes reading a lot more tedious for people who don’t know these things. I think it’s OK every now and then, but she uses it almost too excessively. I guess it’s supposed to be extra cool to write like that. Anyway, i’ve gotten used to it and can see beyond it by now…

Such an interesting take on the story! I completely agree with your stance on American Allusion (granted, I needed to google that word first) I don’t believe the author has timelessness in mind when she writes her novels. In “Happy Place” there are just as much “new” slang and current happening mentioned that I believe it becomes rather nostalgic. Sally Rooney does a great job to avoid that but I can’t help to think that it feels impersonal, you know what I mean?

SwissHelena I think you cannot compare this book so easily with Normal People. I think this one just does not have the sociological layer that the other one has. Emily Henry just writes the relaxing love stories with smut and has no other ambitions. Whereas Sally Rooney wanted to write an intellectual novel about love. And that is why their language is so different. Frankly, I found the lack of punctuation and language in Normal People harder to read (also annoying, as if she was trying to show how posh and well-educated a writer she is) than some American references in this book.

So I finished the first part and I’m definitely one of those that got into the story quick! It’s the first book by Emily Henry I read and I’m really liking her writing.

As a few of you already noted, I think Daphnes approach to the breakup is really good and also refreshing to see that in a romance novel. I had expected more anger directed at Peter.

And right now I’m really liking the relationship between Daphne and Miles and I’m exited to read more.

I love the story so far! It started and had a really interesting introduction to Daphne‘s love experience with Peter. It actually surpassed my expectations.

I still have mix feelings about Daphne. On the one hand I understand her and know that she still needs her time to find herself and so on. On the other hand it feels as she would have prejudices against other people, which I cannot identifx myself with.

About the relationship of Daphne and Miles: I first thought they would not get along, but it changed really fast and I feel they actually like each other and there is some chemistry that they have to find out first. So far I like it 😊

It is my first book of Emily Henry. So far, I really enjoyed the story. The first 128 pages flew by quickly. The characters are very well described, and you quickly find them lovable. The author mixes humour with heavier themes like loss, new beginnings, and the quest for personal happiness. The right book for readers who enjoy romantic books with a bit of depth. Unfortunately, I must admit that I probably I don’t understand all the nuances of the funny parts, that’s a pity., So far, the book is very enjoyable to read. I really like Daphne and Miles, but not so much Petra and Peter, they’re unsympathetic right now. I’m excited to see what happens next.
