Fanny
I like Nina the best so far I think, she seems the most mature of them all, although that’s probably because she went through the most trauma of them all, and had to pick up Mick’s slack when it came to his family.
Speaking of, although it’s fun to read because of the writing style, I don’t really like the flashbacks all that much, mainly because Mick and June’s story feels kind of cliché to me. Also, cheaters will always be cheaters is just such a solidified fact in my head that I can’t help but roll my eyes at that trope, and the very obvious hope that they’ll change, “surely he wouldn’t do it a second time”.
I don’t blame June for relenting, mainly because we see Mick’s begging from his point of view, how it was like a game to him and he knew exactly what buttons to push to make her give in to him, absolutely disgusting that guy, for so many reasons! I really hope June won’t keep forgiving him in the rest of the book, she deserves the world.
Another thing that made my blood boil was Mick’s internal thoughts and pats on his own back for how well he provides for his family, as if that’s all that a father is and needs to be. I know that it’s his background that he has no idea what a good father does and that it’s set in a different time, but that he has no anxiety about it, whether he’s doing everything right or if he could be doing something wrong, is really frustrating and mindboggling.
I think that they surf because it’s the hobby that works best when living on the coast of Malibu. And I think they decided to make a living out of it because they get publicity anyway because of their dad, might as well make money out of your hobby, and by becoming famous for something so far from anything performance-related like acting or singing they would get less of a headline like “Following in their father’s shoes”.
