  • Fanny Hey everybody! 🙂 I already finished the book last week, but forgot to post it here. I’m going to be honest, it’s not much in my taste at all, unfortunately. It’s an easy read, which I can appreciate at times, but I dislike the writing style and stylistic choices incredibly much.

Anyway, regarding the characters. I like Nina and Kit. They’re cute, even though I wish we knew more about them (considering how far we already are in the book). I really, really dislike Jay. The way he talks about women is very bothersome to me, even though I can acknowledge the time this plays in. He basically insults Lara (bland, not very beautiful at all, or whatever it was) before saying he’s “mysteriously” attracted to her. Like, internalized beauty standards much? Didn’t like that at all. The same goes for him expecting shyness and coyness from women, saying that they should’ve learned it as a form of a social contract. As I said, I can acknowledge the fact that this plays in the 80s, but it’s just odd to me that he seems to be the only character that actually says this stuff out loud, so I can’t blame this on the time, but rather on him instead. Hud bores me. That’s all I have to say about him.

Don’t even get me started on June and Mick. At this point, I apologize if I bring up things that are after the pages we’re talking about! Obviously, we all hate Mick. I don’t like that he kind of grooms her when they first get together (although I’m not entirely sure about the age difference), but he definitely makes large promises, and she just kind of goes with it. The fact that her only expectation of him by June is that he’s supposed to be home when she asks him to is baffling to me as well. And oh my god, the fact that he didn’t show up to the birth of Nina? Seriously? What a jerk. Anyway, I have much more to say about this book later on (plot lines and writing style) but this is it for now! Hope everybody is enjoying it, though. 😃

    HI Fanny,

I find the 4 children very likeable in different ways. Tend a little preference for Nina, as she is the oldest and holds them together ( I am the oldest of 4 so can associate nicely). I feel little Kit will reserve some surprises.

Of course what is there to like about the dreaded absent father, June keeps taking him back, maybe hoping he would settle. Those men don’t settle, we know that, but she did not then.

The flashbacks between 2 periods makes the reading pleasant, I like that, it also allows for nice places to have a break.

The reading is easy, style flows nicely. I will keep going, eager to know what the party will bring !

    Thank you
