I was gifted this book as part of a Leserunde and Spoiler alert: I couldnt finish it!
The premise of a mixture of fantasy, dystopia, paranormal and science-fiction reeled me in and I was quite excited to start it.
However pretty soon I realized that there is no way to understand anything without the glossary (at least there was one!)….there was A LOT of info-dumping and at the same time I still don’t really understand about the rules of this world and the different kinds of voyants. Also the author used “slang” words for things like money or guns (and more) and I just don’t get why. It was quite confusing how this book managed to be too much and boring at the same time.
In the first few chapters we get introduced to this world. An alternate reality England where a few hundred years ago humans started developping clarvoyancy. They still exist in this society but are hunted and killed by non-clairvoyant people. Our main protagonist Paige is a clairvoyant and, surprise surprise, a very special one at that.
She works for criminal voyants in the underground of London.
Then in chapter 4 or so she is captured but not turned over to the authorities but brought to Oxford to take part in a sort of “reaping” where special beings called Rephaim claim them as slaves.
And of course, because Paige is oh-so-special she gets picked by a tall-dark-and-handsome Rephaim…and already my alarm-bells were ringing.: A young girl with a mysterious (alien?) guy that is a few hundred years old has not fascinated me in Twilight and does not do so here either.
There are many other disturbing things happening…very quickly too. So add this to still feeling bored most of the time and not liking Paige (or her “master”) at all…and I realized I just couldnt finish this book at all.
I have read MANY fantasy and dystopian books in my time..believe me.
But I don’t believe in finishing a book anymore that just bores you.
So this might be for you..it surely wasnt for me.
However this apparantly was the first book of this author and I have heard good things about her other works…so I might give her another try.
