“What happened to Paul was tragic, but he was not a tragedy.”
When Breath Becomes Air is one of those rare books that really sticks with you. Paul Kalanithi takes you through his life — from being a curious student to a dedicated neurosurgeon and eventually a patient facing his own mortality. It’s a powerful, honest look at life, death and what truly gives our time meaning. It made me reflect on a lot of things, and I’d definitely recommend it.
I did take off one star, though. The beginning didn’t quite catch me right away and the story felt a little unfinished — which I know is part of the reality of his situation and I truly respect that. Still, I found myself wishing for just a bit more.
All in all, it’s a beautiful read that hits you right in the heart.
