This debut novel by Coco Mellors, seems like it’ll be a sweet, funny, old-fashioned love story, but it’s actually much more complicated and darker. It’s about a romance turning into a problematic relationship. The story deals also with stuff like drugs, alcohol, suicide and messed-up families, not just lovey-dovey stuff. The main characters, Cleo and Frank, aren’t perfect—they’ve got their own baggage. The big question the book asks is whether their relationship makes things better or worse for them.
Mellors employs multiple perspectives throughout the book, including voices from friends, acquaintances and family members. This technique allows the reader to see Cleo and Frank’s relationship from various angles.
The writing is engaging, often raw and almost obscene at times, which suits the gritty themes of the novel. However, despite Mellors’ skillful prose, I found it challenging to connect with Cleo and Frank and it made it difficult to fully immerse myself in their journey.
Still, the book keeps you interested with its fast pace, sharp talk and unexpected moments. “Cleopatra & Frankenstein” might not be for everyone, but it’s definitely different and grabs your attention in its own way.
It isn’t just a simple love story. It’s about a messed-up relationship, told in a powerful and sometimes harsh way. If you’re into stories that aren’t just about happy endings and want something deeper, this book could make you think. It didn’t totally click with me, but it’s definitely worth checking out for its honesty and interesting characters.
