The short stories about life in the Yukon Territory are given even more life by London’s writing style. You can almost feel the bone-chilling, deadly cold that is the constant, unconquerable antagonist in the short stories. The fact that London himself spent some time in the Yukon region is reflected in the stories in the book. I found it particularly interesting that the lifestyles and culture of the First Nations living there were also portrayed. Nevertheless, it is important to know that the short stories were written between 1900 and about 1910, so the stories contain problematic expressions that are no longer used today.
