With a good heart I am giving this book two stars - honestly I just felt generous I guess but I cannot fathom what I have just read.
RANT
This book has been praised for so long and even belongs to the Banned Books and honestly rightfully so. Not because of its contents but because of how poorly written and edited it was. The MC / Author seemed very self centred and is victimising himself in situation that do not a) have anything to do with his sexuality or b) his trauma - some “scenes” were mere coincidence that he took as a sign of homophobia or discrimination? Maybe I am being too harsh, I do believe that everyone’s experience is unique but to publish it in that way is very problematic.
RANT OVER
Now to my more “professional” POV: This book hasn’t set in enough to be considered a manifesto let alone an autobiography. The setting was meant to showcase the struggles of living in a poor neighbourhood while also being a POC and queer which has been mentioned but not very well … explained? I struggle to find the words to say that I have bigger expectations when it comes to these specific topics.
