If I’ve learned one thing from everything that’s happened to me, it’s that there is no such thing as the biggest mistake of your existeence. There is no such thing as ruining your life. Life’s a pretty resilient thing, it turns out.
I wanted to read something lighthearted and Sophie Kinsella’s The Undomestic Goddess was exactly this: lighthearted.
Samantha Sweeting is a laywer with the top law firm ‘Carter Spink’. She is practically sacrificing herself by working overtime in order to receive a partnership. But then, she makes a huge mistake, runs away and … accidently ends up getting a job as a housekeeeper. The problem is Samantha has not the slightest idea about houskeeping …
I have to admit that this novel was better than I thought it would be, because in the first couple of chapters Samantha is rather a caricature of a workaholic lawyer.
I liked how the book emphasized the fact that housekeeping is hard work. While I was sceptical towards the romance (Nathaniel, the gardener, is of course really good-looking: tall, muscular and these blue eyes… cliché!!) and Samantha seems somewhat superficial when she says that she has fallen in love with him after having seen im without shirt. At least, Nathaniel did not turn out to be a macho like I thought he would.
Besides, the romance is not the major plot in this book which I enjoyed.
Looking forward to reading another Sophie Kinsella novel in the future.
