A frightful scream wakened her, too real to remain a dream. There was once more, a faint whisper in the gloomy corridors of the manor.
A cold shiver went down her body when she tried to locate the scream, that sound seemed so familiar.
There is something she couldn’t completely place her finger on, not yet, but Genevieve is determined to find out.
Genevieve Timmons survives as a fake spiritualist; she inherited a once flourishing seance business from her mother. Upon her mother’s death, she is confronted by her landlady, who gives her an ultimatum for either being one of her girls or stealing from her wealthy seance clients.
But Genevieve has other plans, one last client and she could improve her life forever. But being set up by her landlady, she is facing the gallows, for something she didn’t commit. Her fate seems determined, with no chance of escape, until an odd man appears who wants to aid her if she can perform one ghostly business for him.
That’s how she arrives at Somerset Park, an immensely large estate, Genevieve is suddenly thrown into a higher class with people she doesn’t know. Such an unwelcome place, especially for someone who intends to conjure a ghost. It gets even more bizarre when the estate’s owner, Mr. Pemberton asks for her services too. He wants to find out who executed his bride.
The longer Genevieve Timmons is on the estate upon the cliffs, the more secrets she finds out about the people living there. And it’s relatively evident that not everyone is happy to bring them up. And what about the voices she hears, is she the only one overhearing them?
Her task at Somerset seems to represent an enormous burden, as the outcome decides her life. Timmons is in conflict with two sides, which are both trying to consume her to uncover the truth. Furthermore, she begins to question herself about her own past and her belief in her own work.
At long last, Genevieve finds herself on the right side, a side she can rely on. She realizes that she’s not all alone and that some people care about her.
I was instantly interested in the picture, and after reading the premise I knew that I have to obtain it and I was right. This gothic murder mystery, which is set in England during the Victorian age captivated me right from the start. What immediately fascinated me was Genevieve Timmons, such a witty and refreshing character, her straightforward manners are consistent to the point.
I enjoyed this book because it was opposed to other romances, with a touch of crime. I’ve never discovered such a wicked mystery before, full of illusions and mystery.
It was a joy to discover, a delightful mix, which should please everyone and every age. A funny page-turner, with a happy end.
