I read this book five days ago and still can’t decide what I think of it. Lightlark is the first book by Alex Aster and you may have heard of it because it was very popular on BookTok.
Isla Crown is on her way to the Fifth Centennial and is trying to break the curse with the five other rulers of the realms. Although they all have the same goal, none of them can be trusted. The prophecy says that one of them must die to break the curse. And when it comes to life and death, no one can be trusted. Sadly, Isla has to learn this in her own way.
When I started the book, I wasn’t really hooked because it took me too long to get into it. I know it’s a fantasy book and they’re often hard to get into because of all the world building etc. It was just hard to understand all the different characters and what their magic was.
But as the book goes on you start to understand things better, I think the author made some scenes too short while dragging others out. In the middle of the book I thought it might get good, but then unfortunately the author rushed the ending and put in too many twists. Before I could understand what happened, the next thing had already happened. And some of the things that happened just didn’t make sense to me because there were no hints (and I mean no hints) in the book that it could take that turn.
And then, after so many things, the book just ended and that ending was a little mess in my opinion. I sat on my sofa and just stared at the last page not understanding what had just happened. As you can see, this book really confused me….
I still can’t really say what I think of it or if I will read the second book. Because on the one hand I really want to know what happens next with the characters (not because I liked it so much, but because I want to know what the author will do in the future with this story that has a lot of potential), on the other hand I don’t want to read a book that doesn’t quite convince me.
What I would like to mention is that this was her first book, so maybe my criticism is a little too harsh. I’m looking forward to seeing what she does next.
