There is a wonderful narrative arc in Felix Ever After which allows the reader to be taken up in this bubbly romance in a easy yet compelling read. It is a novel one could read in a sitting and raises important questions around gender and sexual identity and self-acceptance. I would definitely recommend the book to its target audience, i.e. young adults.
While countering the underrepresentation of cultural minorities in the LGBTQIA+ community as well as portraying a transgender main character, some aspects of the book are quite predictable. The focus is clearly on Felix’ character and his perception of the people with respect to him. His family’s reaction (or lack thereof) to his transition take a big part of the book. There are a couple of inconsistencies that might slightly disturb the reading flow, but all in all, it’s a easy, bubbly, romancy read.
What Felix achieves in the scope of this book is to find his own gender and sexual identity and might empower its reader to question and find their own identity not through other’s people validation but self-love and self-acceptance.
