I was very excited to dive into Irish mythology, as I am only familiar with a few myths so far. The idea behind Children of God and Fighting Men was good, in my opinion, but I had a hard time making a real connection with the protagonists, Gormflaith and Fodla. Especially with the former. She seemed too predictable to me and presented a literary femme fatale that was not particularly exciting for me to read about. Although I liked the author’s writing style, it felt a bit incoherent at times. I am aware that after reading a book like Babel, which is not Kuang’s first book, I was a little biased. I think after finishing COGAFM, I wished I knew more about the Formorians and the Tuatha Dé Danann and that the story focused more on Fodla, because her story excited me a bit more. In any case, I want to know more about Irish myths, and I am grateful to the author for introducing me to some. Besides that, it was interesting to get in touch with Irish names. Even though the book didn’t get four or five stars for me, it was still a good book.
