Marguerite Angelou, called Maya, shares her autobiography with her readers. As a person of color she grew up with her grandmother and her brother in a small african-american community on the outskirts of a white town in the American south. She had to fight for everything she wanted (which isn’t a play station or a new phone but education, a job, acceptance, etc.) She tells her story in a very calm way, not trying to make the reader feel bad about her experiences. She had very difficult parents, and faced sexual violence and racism at a very early age already. At the same time she probably faced a lot of similar problems other women had at that time.
I’m giving it ⅘ books because at some point I found the story a bit lenghty and hard to believe (how could any parent be that self involved and forget about their children`?) So I had to put it down for a few weeks. I would still very much recommend it!
