What a fantastic and gripping (first) thriller from Eva Dolan. I got into the story very easily and making progress through the book, I was elaborating theories of which person could be responsible for the murder, only to see my asumptions debunked later on… It’s absolutely not gore, there are some vivid scenes, but not written with so many details that you have to squint your eyes while reading it or “fast forward” to the next few pages.
It’s a really well-written and well-crafted novel set in eastern England. A small town inhabited with a lot of immigrants, cheap labour. And while the town is facing the hardships of the recession, some people use this backdrop to make financial profit. It’s an absolutely revealing portrait of (some parts of) England and throws important social questions into the room.
Last but not least, I love the duo Zigic & Ferreira!
