This 600 page heavyweight of a book is not for the occasional reader, it takes dedication and determination to get through it. Nevertheless it was one of the most remarkable books that I have read this year!
The story is very dense and complex, but the author manages to paint a brilliant portrait of America and its racial and cultural problems of the 20th century through the lives of three very musically talented siblings and their mixed-race parents.
I dare you to pick it up!
a quote from the book on page 385
„…Thats what being black in this country means. You’ll never know anything. When they give you change and won’t put it in your hand? When they cross the street a block down from you? Maybe they just had to cross the street. All you know for sure is that everyone hates you, hates you for catching them in a lie about everthing they’ve ever thought of themselves…“
