It all starts in 1972 with a corpse found at the bottom of a well. But who was this person and how did it get there in the first place? What starts as some kind of murder mystery will become a much deeper story about the community of Chicken Hill in the 1930s, where immigrant jews and african americans share what they have, live together and try to understand each others struggles.
When I started reading this novel, I did not know what to expect, since I went into it kind of blindly. But what I got was a beautifully written story with many different characters, all connected in some way or another, love, humor, suspense but also unjustice. I was sometimes wondering where all the different strands and stories will go, but James McBride did an amazing job in bringing it all together so that it all makes sense in the end.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this novel. It was the first one of this year and I will definitely remember it!
