The Edge of Summer

This is a lovely summer romance at the beach with a perfect cute & charming male love interest. Despite the minor problems I had with the MC this book was fully enjoyable. Cor is in Cape Cod for the summer, where she stays at her uncle Jack‘s and does an internship at the Marine Research and Conservation Alliance. It used to be a dream of her and her late best friend Ella, but withouth Ella it doesn‘t seem to be the dream they planned on it to be. Cor feels lost and for the reader it sometimes feels as if she‘s doing something she feels she has to rather than something she really loves. Of course, there‘s a stunning & charming AND cute guy, too: Mannix. And not only does he work in her uncle‘s favorite restaurant, he‘s also lifeguard at the beach and then he is at her Uncle‘s house because he‘s renovating the bathroom. I mean, he‘s kind of the perfect book-boyfriend: he loves helping people amd making them happy- and being in the ocean. The beach vibe of this book is naturally immaculate. But they are both pretty much determined on keeping the other just a distraction rather than something serious, although this seemed a bit silly to me. Only real downside was the (ten pages lasting) third act breakup which was so minor that I didn‘t even get we had a problem until they wouldn‘t talk to each other anymore. Cor‘s train of thought in that part was kind of confusing and not making any sense? First saying the „problem“ (not really one) didn‘t bother her at all and then making another completely up in her mind and finally blaming Mannix for it. Honestly, it was a bit weird. Alright, alright, there was another (last part of the book?) breakup, that was fully justified and quite bad! At least something. But can I mention something I think is generally wrong with YA lovestories? That boys snap and and curse around and their emotions justifiy that? While I almost never see a female MC do that? It just feels so weird and wrong and it happens a lot in those books and I don‘t think it‘s right. Cor has some major issues as well, and sometimes this was emphasised by the fact that I couldn‘t follow her thinking process. But if you‘re looking for a simple summer love story you should pick this one up.
