Thought-provoking ... An absorbing slow burn of a book that not only casts light on Germany's recent history but depicts, with careful tenderness, a family simultaneously torn apart by ideology and bound by powerful ties of love' Guardian.
Shame was one of the most noble human feelings, I thought. It was a really important feeling. The fact that I felt ashamed now - ashamed of my fear, ashamed of all our embarrassing secrets - should be a source of strength, not weakness. I was so engaged in this book that I read it in one single day, because I could not stop thinking about it. The plot was interesting and authentic, the writing style was great. I am glad that I finished 2022 with such a good novel!!
