I love a weird book, but I draw the line at turning magical realism into performance art. But first things first. I was really intrigued by the starting point of the story: Motherhood being so unbearable it turns you into a beast. Plausible. The first half of the book – great. Angry, unsettling and a bit disgusting. I liked it. But then it got stuck. Someone online said, this should have been a short story, and I agree. I felt like I was reading the same part over and over again. And at some point I was just confused. I think I expected this book to take a different turn, which it didn’t, so I got upset. But she really lost me when she tried to convince her readers that performance art was a thing people care about outside of the „performance art bubble“. No. The cover is 10/10 though.
If you’re looking for a weird book with magical realism and animals read Bunny by Mona Awad.
