Here’s all the things I liked about the second DI Ryan Wilkins novel:
- The characters: Ryan and Ray Wilkins who couldn’t be more different; one seemingly has it all, the other can’t hold on to the things he’s got; one has had an expensive education, the other grew up in a trailer park; both are struggling this time and it’s fascinating how Mason portraits them
- The language and atmosphere: Mason alternates between detailed descriptions and “simply” listing things; especially the latter gives off the impression of something not quite finished, crude even, as well as speeding up the plot; both contrast grossly which fits the horrible crime that took place in the most innocent and charming of settings.
- The plot: We are onto things much quicker than Ray and Ryan because they don’t work together this time; still Mason took me by surprise with several twists and turns; just when I thought, this is it, something else happened (which is also true for the detective’s private lives); I also appreciate that he shows just how difficult it is to find out what happened or to predict what someone might do next.
I could probably write much more but I want to read the next book in the series. Sorry 😉
