A poetically written story about the intensity of first love. This novel embodies what many of us have experienced, so it’s easy to get absorbed in the story.
Lucy loves Susannah with an intensity that is rarely portrayed in such an unbiased way. I have to say that the way she describes Susannah, or the way they relate to each other, was a bit much for me at times. But what can I say? Lucy is experiencing something like this for the first time, and coming from a strict Catholic village, she has no one to look to for guidance. (Because the fact that she is in love with a girl is a secret, even talking about it is almost taboo) So who am I to judge?
It really is an intense story with ups and downs and characters who are not always likeable or behave in the ‘right’ way. But that’s exactly what makes it so exciting, because it seems so true to life. I find it all the more impressive that this is the author’s debut!
I think we can look forward to more great novels.
