I was at the reading in Zurich and if it hadn’t been so disrespectful to the author, I would have started reading his book while he was still answering the interviewer’s questions. It was so fascinating to hear him talk about his memoir, his friendship with Ken and his views on life, loss and growing up. Hua Hsu really gave us an insight into his past. It was a beautiful and emotional evening. Unfortunately all the feelings I’d experienced live I didn’t get from reading the book. There were beautiful parts and wonderful writing but I couldn’t quite grasp what this book was really about. Also I didn’t grow up in America in the 90s which made it hard for me to understand most of the references. I could relate to the general coming of age parts and I enjoyed the way it was written. It was an interesting read just not my favourite one.
