Rune Winters is a witch living in a society where her kind is ruthlessly hunted. By day, she hides in plain sight as a high-society socialite, but by night, she transforms into the “Crimson Moth,” a vigilante dedicated to rescuing witches from execution. On her trail is Gideon Sharpe, a relentless witch hunter and captain of the Blood Guard, who is determined to capture the Crimson Moth. Suspecting Rune, Gideon begins to court her in an effort to unmask her secret identity. Meanwhile, Rune plays along, using their courtship to gather crucial information for her mission. But as their dangerous game of deception deepens, genuine feelings begin to complicate their plans, leading to a tense and inevitable showdown.
It took me a while to get into this book, likely due to the writing style, which didn’t fully resonate with me. The magic system was straightforward and easy to grasp, though the world-building felt a bit sparse. However, the fast-paced plot kept things interesting, and the characters were compelling, with heartbreaking backstories and exciting plot twists that kept me engaged. Despite some initial reservations, I found myself enjoying the story, especially as it built up to an explosive finale. The book ends on a cliffhanger that left me eager for the sequel.
I recommend this book if you enjoy YA romantasy with uncomplicated world-building and a captivating love story between a witch and a witch hunter.
