Loosely based on author Angie Cruz’s mothers story, it tells the tale of Dominican immigrants in New York.
In 1961, the same year Rafael Trujillo gets assassinated, Juan Ruiz proposes to Ana Canción for the first time. Four years later, she’s on her way to New York - with fake papers, married to a man she doesn’t love and no knowledge of the language.
Dominicana is more than a coming of age story. Cruz’s captivating and poignant writing transports you back to New York in the 60s. It’s one of my favorite books this year and I’d recommend it to everyone who’s looking for a fresh, vibrant und unpredictable read.
