First of all, I’m glad to find Inspector Linley more or less back in his old self. After losing his beloved wife, his involvement in new cases is improving. That’s the part I enjoyed because I’ve missed his expertise in solving crimes in the last two novels.
The other part I didn’t enjoy as much was the length of the book itself, the real part of the investigation takes up too much time. The back and forth between London and Lucca in Tuscany didn’t help to keep the suspense high.
Despite the length, the story finds a reasonable conclusion with the promise of more coming, as the series goes on. I’m curious about how Detective Barbara Havers develops in the future.
