3.5 Stars/ I don’t know if Brandon Sanderson should be the first choice when picking a vacation read. Despite my earlier conviction to read another standalone book first, I ventured into the first Mistborn book. For the first half of the book, I wasn’t sure if I liked the story or not. The Last Empire didn’t take me by storm like Elantris did, which is not a bad thing. However, after finishing it, I can say that I liked it a lot and was emotionally moved at times by the events and the decisions that the characters made. I usually warm up to female characters very quickly, but with Vin it took me some time. Still, I think she is a very interesting character with a lot to learn about in the next two books. However, some of the plot developments still seemed a bit odd to me, especially how little it took to create an existing romance. I’m not big on romance, but I think this particular relationship deserved a little more time to develop. However, two other characters that were very well fleshed out were Kelsier and Sazed. Especially with Sazed, the mystical came into play making me want to learn more about the history of his people. The crew grew on me. Despite everything, I think the reader should have been given more time to get to know them better. Also one of the last but bigger choices the characters made felt a bit out of order. Let’s see what the other two books have in store for us!
