Honestly, it made my reading experience so much better by reading it with a dear friend. Not that I didn’t enjoy the story as is, but there were definitely a few things that fell a bit flat for me and which would have made this a 3-star-read.
But since I was able to read it with my dear friend the guessing and tossing ideas back and forth was so much fun.
Also the writing style was engaging, and the stakes got higher at the right moments, so as to hold our attention and intrigue us further.
I wanted to find out why Avery would be considered to inherit this amount of wealth without knowing the deceased man.
I wanted to know what this Emily girl had to do with all of it.
And I wanted to figure out why there was a second will that was exactly the same as the first but with 4 added words.
In terms of the mystery the story did well. When it comes to the romantic drama (if you want to call it that) though, I just felt too old for it. It didn’t catch me. And the love triangle just seems too flat for me. I’m not rooting for either, because both seem wrong - at least in the first book of the trilogy - which then just makes me feel as though it’s just because they’re good-looking and somewhat mysterious 😋
Then again, it would have for sure glued me to the pages if I read it while I was a teenager.
If it was up to me, I’d push Avery towards Xander, as he is just so much fun, and charismatic, and odd. Imagine a 16-year old full of dad jokes and a laid back personality - that’s how I picture him.
Needless to say, he’s my favourite out of all the characters so far 😋
Ultimately, the plot is well thought through and contains enough but not too many twists and turns to engage me as a reader.
If you enjoy Mystery with some YA then I’d totally suggest you read this book - even better if you can pair up with someone to buddy read ☺️
