Griet, a simple girl in a dutch town from a rather poor family, is chosen to be a maid in the house of Vermeer, where the famous artist lives with his family. She is to clean the studio where Jan Vermeer paints, next to her usual duties, of cleaning and washing, as a maid. Each time they meet in the studio their intimacy grows and a rather interesting story begins.
I loved how Tracy Chevalier wrote this book. Everything was well described, so that I almsot could see all of it with my own eyes. This book showed me a different way of looking at colours and more importantly, the way I see my surroundings now. Even though I wished the book to end in a different way (because it is nevertheless a fictious novel), I was still satisfied with the ending, given the circumstances that this story is to have happened in 1666/67.
I truly recommend reading it, even more when one is interested in art. This book gives another perspective of looking at the painting of ‘the girl with a pearl earring’.
