Ok, I don’t think I’ll ever do this book justice, no matter the amount of words, but I have to try.
The first and most obvious thing that made me fall in love with this story is the style of writing.
I was enthralled at once, and could’ve read another 500 pages more! It reminded me so much of Harry Potter somehow, and this will always be a source of comfort.
Also, there were so many beautiful words in there one doesn’t read too often – a few of them being:
- multifarious
- perpendicular
- equidistant
But what makes this book so special is the story it tells and the conclusion it draws. I could try to describe it to you but I feel like this is something you have to experience for yourself.
I will, however, give you two of my favourite passages:
“… And even if you were a pawn – maybe we all are – then you should remember that a pawn is the most magical piece of all. It might look small and ordinary but it isn’t. Because a pawn is never just a pawn. A pawn is a queen-in-waiting. All you need to do is find a way to keep moving. One square after another. Abd you can get to the other side and unlock all kinds of power.”
We don’t have to play every game to know what winning feels like. We don’t have to hear every piece of music in the world to understand music. We don’t have to have tried every variety of grape from every vineyard to know the pleasure of wine.
Safe to say, I’m very mad at myself for not letting enough space in my reading journal for another ‘highlight page’ 🙁
Seriously, I think that everybody needs to read this - it’s, for the lack of a better word, AMAZING!
Ps: I just discovered that the author’s from Sheffield which gives this novel an even more homely feeling as I’ve lived there for almost one year from 2017 to 2018
