Dominique-vR Hi Dominique,
I am not aware of an English book club in Winterthur but I have not searched for one very thoroughly yet I would be keen on joining if you start a new one?
What kind of books are you interested in?
Cheers
Inkling913 Hello,
I’m also still researching a bit but so far I only see book clubs in Zurich. I thought it would be nice to have one in Winterthur, with all the nice café’s we have here.
I read very broadly, mostly historical and speculative fiction, but what I enjoy about book clubs is that it makes me read stuff I wouldn’t necessarily have picked myself. What about you?
I might post into other groups to see if there would be more people who would be interested in getting together.
Dominique-vR Hi Dominique,
I am sorry for my late reply, I have fallen terribly behind on my messages/emails I have some days off at work and I am clearing my “backlog” now…
You are right, it is really a pity that there is no English book club in Winterthur (yet) when there are such beautiful cafes! A real desideratum to start one
Thank you for sharing your reading interests and your intention to get to know new books Sounds like a match! Both historical and speculative fiction are definitely among my reading interests as well. Same as you, I also read and am interested in a wide variety of genres, ranging from classics to historical novels, dystopias/science fiction, crime novels and contemporary literary works, and I am excited to discover new things in a book club!
Great idea, if you have the opportunity to contact some bookclubs in Zurich, there might be more people actually living in Winterthur who might be interested to join
I am looking forward to meeting you
Kind regards,
Natalie
Inkling913 Hi Natalie,
No worries at all - it’s great to read about your reading interests, too!
I’ve posted in some groups on Facebook to find other people who might be interested and got some responses. I created this group now: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1259806585156229 (Winterthur Book Club - Books and Wine) to communicate and vote on possible books and dates. You’re very welcome to join.
If there is enough interest, I’ll plan a first meeting soon
Dominique-vR Hi Dominique, thank you so much for your organisation! Unfortunately, I don’t have Facebook anymore and when I tried to create a mock-account (as I was not sure if my old data is still somewhere on Meta’s servers and I did not want my 20-year-old self to be resurrected ), the new account was rejected…
Do you see any other possibility to inform me of the book/date? Maybe simply by email (without voting option in that case)? As I often work late shifts, I would probably be outvoted anyway, especially the larger the group gets
So I would simply try to adjust my working timetable as soon as you have a date/time? Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you in advance
Inkling913 Hello Natalie,
Of course, that’s no problem. To get the word out, I’ve put a group on Facebook and Meetup, but as soon as there is a large enough pool of people who are interested I’ll probably create a webpage and limit the organising and communication to an email list.
The first meeting will be on December 11th, 7pm, in Winterthur. The book we’ll be discussing is The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne.
To participate, please sign up here (only email needed): https://forms.gle/JvSuydFquFM6LQnK9
Once a critical mass on book club sign ups has been reached, I’ll send out an email with place details
