Volume 2 of the wide world trilogy, the setting is Europe right after WWI.
I didn’t read the first book (yet), and didn’t think like I needed more information about the proceeding actions to follow the plot. Just all those characters had me confused throughout the book, some had quite similar names, and some characters weren’t always called the same.
The wars aren’t usually a topic I read about, so for me it was interessting to learn a little about history, who was allies abd who enemies. Of course it was about espionage, so everyone was crossed and double-crossed.
While you could read book 2 without book 1, you cannot read it without book 3 as there is no ending, the plot just runs into an empty space.
