Annie is a robot, made for pleasing her owner, Doug. They “both” decided for her to become autodidactic, she can teach herself things. Doug and her run into trouble over time because of his friend, Roland. Because of this, Annie starts to explore her “human” side, things like lying. But being more human makes you less perfect, and Annie was made to be perfect, wasn´´ t she?
It had potential but man, this was just not for me at all. I am disappointed and just finished it for the sake of finishing it.
Doug is an absolute (excuse my words) asshole, at some point he treats their dog better then Annie?! Yes, Annie is a bot, but he mistreats her so badly. And there is no explanation given for his behavior that would make it a bit more understandable. I felt like he is how he is just for having another bad male character. And I´ m not even going to mention Roland because he is just as awful.
Annie is an AI, she is supposed to be able to teach herself things, like AI usually does. But Annie does not. She registers the dirt in their apartment, but has to be told to clean up. There are tons of books there, but she only reads that one book Doug gave her. This whole thing felt like the author wanted to write a book about AI and its relationship with a human, knowing nothing about it.
I rate this book 2 stars because I liked the parts with Annie when she was not with Doug, and the end was open to, which gave it something interesting.
If you are interested in this theme, watch “Her” with Joaquin Phoenix. They did an amazing job with that movie.
