This book has such an intense and eerie atmosphere. The Cover paves the way and the story does the rest. Right from the first chapter you get sucked into this dark and gloomy world full of stories, magic and mystery.
I love how Ava Reid uses the image of literal and figurativ drowning throughout the book. Water, salt and the sea are the reoccurring themes of the story, which intensify the already creepy mood. I started and finished this book within just a few days. It was such a pleasure to dive into this story and let myself drift along with the pages. This book addresses various types of misogyny and sexism, which makes some scenes quite difficult to read. But as a countermeasure there is a lot of feminism (Yeyi!). That makes me love this book even more. There is also a very cute and healthy romance, which made me happy.
It’s a YA novel, which is fine, but I think with an adult fantasy book you could have explored the darker themes of this book even more.
It was an intriguing, magical and eerie read. Perfect for autumn.
