A mystical if not magical journey - an elderly couple, Axl and Beatrice, on their voyage to see their son, trave¨lling through an enchanting england where oblivion reigns. Strange people and beings they meet, an elusive ferryman and a knight of the roundtable among them. Will they meet their son? And what is it about Axl’s past that he cannot - or will not - remember?
Not only is this Ishiguros undisputed masterpiece (in my opinion), it’s also probably my favorite book of all time. The combination of genres (epic, fantasy, fairytale, magical realism) with Ishiguros style of writing plus the myriad of themes (the journey, old age, love, memory and forgetting, arthurian lore and of course something I won’t spoil) merge into an experience few books manage to measure up to.
… and I can hear the last few lines still echoing within me.
