“You must be the best judge of your own happiness.”
The first time I picked this novel up I only managed to read the first fifty pages and then I put it back in the shelf, but a couple of weeks ago I watched the new movie adaptation from 2020 and I loved it! That is why I decided to give Emma a second try. Sadly, my reading experience was no different - even though this time I made it through the whole novel.
I just could not concentrate on the plot! My mind was somewhere completely else, because the story just wasn’t interesting.
Emma consists mainly of dialogue, but after pages and pages of it I had no idea what these people were talking about. The characters are not really likeable and I did not feel any romantic tension between Emma and Mr. Knightley. They gave me totally different vibes, but definitely not “we’re in love”.
It seems that I am not able to enjoy Austen’s novels although I really tried - Pride & Prejudice and Northanger Abbey did not hit either.
Maybe I am going to try Persuasion next (I watched the new Netflix movie and quite liked it).
However, for this novel I strongly recommend the 2020 movie or even Clueless, which is actually a modern adaptation.
