This book is an autobiography by Baek Sehee, following her life from childhood to the present. She shares how she has dealt and continues to deal with difficult situations. The book includes her personal reflections as well as conversations with her therapist. It’s written in very simple, straightforward English which makes it easy to follow. Many of the pages are mostly dialogue, especially between her and her therapist. There are also some really beautiful and funny quotes throughout the book. Overall, it’s a thoughtful and touching book that’s quick to read and leaves a lasting impression.

It gave me a lot of mixed emotions. I think it’s hard reading through someones therapy sessions without remembering their own and comparing. I loved the dialogue style and the different mini chapters after the epilogue. The writing was witty but still did not lack the depth of the topic. Nonetheless I really recommend this - a quick read that gets you thinking.

Sie sabotiert ihre Beziehungen und sich selbst durch ungesundes Verhalten wie Binge Eating, schaut oft auf andere aber auch sich selbst herunter. Warum tut sie das? Sie weiss, so kann es nicht weitergehen, sie braucht Hilfe. Diese sucht sie bei einem Psychologen. Die Gespräche nimmt sie auf, damit sie alles genau aufschreiben kann. Was mich so berührt hat, ist folgendes: Man hat vielleicht nicht die selben “Leiden” wie Baek Sehee, fühlt sich vielleicht ganz anders, trotzdem kann man so vieles mitnehmen. Warum mögen andere mich, oder vielleicht auch nicht? Wie werde ich wahrgenommen, wie möchte ich wahrgenommen werden und ist das wirklich so wichtig? Wir begleiten Beak Sehee durch eine schwierige Zeit, denn Heilung ist ein langer Prozess - aber das ist ok. Es gibt so einige Sätze, die ich mir markiert habe. WIchtige Dinge, die man in guten und schweren Zeiten nicht vergessen sollte, über Selbstliebe, Selbstzweifel und das Nicht-Aufgeben, selbst wenn man alles hinschmeissen möchte. Spannend fand ich auch, dass der Psychologe selbst kurz etwas beiträgt, wie er sich beim Lesen des Buches gefühlt hat, als er seine eigenen Ratschläge selber nochmals liest. Diesen Süd-koreanischen Bestseller kann ich euch nur wärmstens empfehlen, liest sich auch sehr leicht auf Englisch.
