Abigail Dean’s The Death of Us isn’t the kind of book I’d usually pick up, and it deals with some really heavy themes, which definitely shaped how I experienced it. I did really appreciate the narration style, it felt natural and intimate, and the characters came across as genuinely human, with all their flaws and contradictions.
At the same time, it didn’t completely hold my attention throughout. The pacing can feel slow, and because it leans so much into emotion rather than plot, I found myself drifting at times.
Overall, I’m glad I read it. Even if it didn’t fully grip me, I can see the strength in the writing and the way it handles difficult subject matter.
