I knew going into this, that it was likely going to be a bit of a struggle for me. I am usually not one for dickensian writing. The skipping around of the story and the long winded descriptions were not easy for me at times. The book takes a long while to really get going. And it really only gets properly gripping in the last 150-200 pages. Before that it is more of an atmospheric read, which a lot of people enjoy more than I do. I’m guessing it might be related to having aphantasia and not really getting much out of the scenic descriptions. Nontheless I am glad I didn’t give up as this is a very unique historical fantasy novel and well worth reading.
