Little Alien, come sit with me. I’ll tell you a story… A story about a girl who doesn’t seem to fit into this world from the beginning, doesn’t understand social cues and gets a lot of things wrong. But then she sees a documentary about the Voinich Manuscript, something alien-like, like her and she is hooked. Does this manuscript has all the answers to everything she does not understand?
This book was a quick read and I enjoyed it quite a lot. We get glimpses of her home life with her mentally unstable mother and a father that doesn’t seem that much helpful. Often I was frustrated with them, because they didn’t think of getting Little Alien any kind of help or assessment. We also never get to know Little Alien’s name, which was interesting. Her school life is just as messy as at home, the only good place seems to be the library where she spends a lot of time. The footnotes and “further readings” were hilarious!
All in all it’s a lovely debut novel that helps to understand neurodivergent kids a bit better, which was very well done in my opinion.
