After only a few pages I knew this was going to be brilliant. And of course it was. Rebecca F. Kuang knows how to write a good story. And she has no trouble integrating a variety of important topics in those stories without compromising the quality of the book or the fun of reading it.
It deals with current events like cultural appropriation, (internalized) racism, white feminism, cancel culture – just to name a few. And it manages to portray the social media world in a realistic and actually interesting way. Writing this book from the “villains” perspective was genius and to do completely without likable characters very bold. This could have easily been a tiring sermon about good and evil, instead it becomes a gripping, believable story about flawed humans, who have first and foremost their own interests at heart. Thought-provoking, very well written and an absolute blast.
This book exceeded my already high expectations and you should definitely read it.
