The silent companions is a historical fiction which gives you the creeps. It is a perfect read for fall and the spooky halloween season. The story takes place in the English country side during the Victorian era in 1866. It was my first gothic horror novel and I can say I loved every page of it. The build up of the story, as well as the 3 different settings (1866, 1635, and the hospital) keep the reader interested, as well as longing to know more and trying to unravel the mysteries of the Bridge. I have to admit that during some chapters I was a bit frightened but yearning to read on. Laura Purcell describes the setting well with a ton of details which makes the reader feel immersed in the story. The plot also never lacks a dull moment. Can really recommend this book for a perfect spooky fall read.
