My go to recommendation when it comes to fantasy. Sure it’s dark, it’s gritty (some may say edgy) and bloody thus not everyone’s cup of fantasy. But let me tell you why it’s that great a series.
Pros
- Mia Corvere is a thoroughly likeable and strong main character
- Her signature abilities are a delight (especially her familiar) and lead to compelling story beats
- The supporting cast is superb, there’s hardly a badly written or superfluous character
- Interesting world and lore
- Kristoff writes villains who are easy to love to hate
- A rarity: I was fully invested in the love story. Mia’s lover is easily my favourite character. What a great couple!
- Kristoff is not afraid to kill beloved characters.
- Excellent twists and finales.
Cons
- Yet another story about revenge
