When I read the first chapters of The Light of the Midnight Stars I thought that I would enjoy this novel, because there were beautiful passages like the following one:
Something that can sting can also heal. Something that can burn and destroy can also light up the night and keep the darkness at bay. I am a spark of light now, no longer bursting with flame and words I can’t contain.
But as I was reading on, I noticed that there was no plot. Normally, I don’t care about plots, however, for me, especially a fantasy book needs some kind of direction - and The Light of the Midnight Stars does not have that.
I also thought that the story is about sisterhood. It is not. The novel focuses on marriage and romantic relationships, but I did not care about the love interests and the relationships in general. And even though The Light of the Midnight Stars is a long book (at times it even felt endless!), the characters lacked depth and I simply did not care about them.
In the author’s note, Rena Rossner explains that she was inspired by different real events as well as fairy tales. I think, she wanted too much and lost her focus.
I am glad I managed to finish reading this book, but I did not enjoy it and will never pick it up again.
