I shut the bathroom door and caught sight of my face in the mirror. I had no idea how quickly it was to change, to fade. If I had, I would have stared at my reflection, memorizing it. It was the last time I would look into a real mirror for more than a decade.
Ruta Sepetys writes about historical happenings that are rather unheard of.
Between Shades of Gray/ Ashes in the Snow is about fifteen-year-old Lina Vilkas who gets deported with her brother and mother from Lithuania to Siberia, sentenced to forced labor.
It’s a powerful, horrifying story about survival, hope, love, strength.
It was the one thing I never questioned. I wanted to live. I wanted to see my brother grow up. I wanted to see Lithuania again.
As I experienced with Sepetys other novels, I did not want to stop reading. Her writing impresses me deeply.
You can feel how much work and emotion the author put into this story - a part of history her relatives went through.
I can only recommend this novel!
Although history contains sadness and pain, it also shines light on hope, courage and resilience.
